Urge Mount Allison University to Address Student Wellness Concerns

The Issue

On Friday, February 9th, 2024, approximately 30 Mount Allison Student Leaders submitted a 32-page complaint letter to the Board of Regents to express their deep concerns regarding the current state of the Department of Student Affairs at the university.

We have yet to receive a meaningful response as of March 1st, 2024.

Student leaders emphasized that they have observed a consistent decline and dilution of essential supports and resources which are the responsibility of the Department, hindering the academic and personal growth of students attending Mount Allison and causing active harm to those trying to provide support or services on campus. This includes mental health supports, access to healthcare, sexual violence resources, support for 2SLGBTQIA+, and BIPOC students, accessible buildings on campus, spiritual care, harm reduction practices, accessibility services, and so much more.

It appears that dedicated professionals who play pivotal roles in shaping and supporting students are stretched thin, seemingly having to manage overwhelming workloads due to what appears to be poor organization and a lack of resources being put into the care of employees and students. These issues have been consistently raised by student leaders and various groups across campus in different ways, in a variety of contexts, highlighting a pervasive and systemic set of problems requiring urgent attention. While additional positions have been added or created to address areas of importance, there does not appear to be any strategic planning or leadership around implementing and evaluating the effectiveness and sustainability of positions directly related to student wellness.

The Department of Student Affairs has not adequately addressed concerns raised about student wellness. We call upon Mount Allison University to hold an open meeting addressing these concerns with the entire community - including representatives from all student groups, and any students who wish to voice their concerns following the initial release of the student letter addressed to the Board of Regents.

We also call for meaningful responses to each of the questions raised in the initial letter to the Board of Regents

It is time we prioritize student well-being by ensuring adequate funding and better organization of resources. Further, the university must take student concerns seriously. Please sign this petition urging Mount Allison University to take immediate action towards improving its approach towards student wellness.
