Urge Meta to Stop Blocking Classical Musicians' Content on Instagram and Facebook

The Issue

As a classical musician, I find myself constantly battling with the copyright algorithm on Instagram and Facebook. Every time I post my performances of works that are in the public domain, I am hit with copyright infringement blocks. This is because the algorithm cannot distinguish between my performance and a recorded version that may be under copyright.

This issue not only limits my reach as an artist but also mutes my videos. Consequently, I am forced to spend valuable time each day submitting disputes just to have my content reinstated. This struggle is shared by many classical musicians across these platforms.

It's important to note that music in the public domain belongs to everyone and should be freely accessible without fear of copyright infringement. According to US Copyright Law, any musical work published before 1925 falls into this category (US Copyright Office). Yet despite this legal protection, countless musicians are still facing unwarranted blocks on their content. Similar laws are in place worldwide and protect classical musicians from unlawful copyright claims by big companies.

We call upon Meta to improve its algorithm or implement a system where artists can register their performances as interpretations of public domain works. By doing so, it would prevent unnecessary blocking or muting of such content while respecting copyrighted versions.

Please sign this petition if you believe in supporting classical musicians and preserving our right to share music from the public domain without unjustified restrictions.
