Urge Meta to Register in Nepal and Unblock Access
The Issue
For many families in Nepal, including mine, platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger are the only means to stay connected to loved ones. My mother, like many other Nepali parents, has limited digital literacy and relies on me to assist her with these platforms. The blocking of these services isolates families, especially when young relatives are abroad.
Since September 2025, the people of Nepal have faced a blackout of important communication channels. The cause? Meta, the global entity behind these platforms, has not registered locally, resulting in the government blocking access to Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. This has disrupted the lives of millions of students, educators, and businesses that depend on these platforms for daily communication, learning, and work.
Communication isn't just about sharing photos or status updates. It's about maintaining familial bonds, facilitating education, and ensuring business continuity. For countless users in Nepal, the absence of these platforms means a significant breakdown in communication, impacting everything from personal relationships to educational pursuits.
Governments should prioritize the digital needs of their citizens and encourage international corporations to comply with local laws for the benefit of said citizens. We urge Meta to initiate and expedite the registration process in Nepal so these platforms can be restored.
