Urge Maricopa City Council to Reinstate Low-Cost Facilities for Non-Profit Performing Arts Groups

Urge Maricopa City Council to Reinstate Low-Cost Facilities for Non-Profit Performing Arts Groups
The Issue
As a member of the Maricopa community and an active participant in local performing arts, I've been directly affected by the recent cancellation of Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) between the City and non-profit performing arts groups. These MOUs have been in place for years, providing low or no-cost rehearsal and performance spaces that were crucial to our operations.
The sudden change has left small non-profits like Maricopa Community Theatre facing exorbitant costs - nearly $31,000 per year - to utilize space that is already funded by our tax dollars. This is not only a financial burden on these organizations but also threatens their very existence and the cultural enrichment they bring to our community.
Maricopa thrives because of its vibrant arts scene. According to Americans for the Arts, nonprofit arts organizations generate $166.3 billion in economic activity annually, supporting 4.6 million jobs nationally (Americans for the Arts, 2015). Locally too, these groups contribute significantly to our economy while fostering creativity and unity among residents.
We urge the City Council of Maricopa to reconsider this decision and reinstate MOUs with non-profit performing arts groups. By doing so, we can ensure these vital cultural institutions continue enriching our community without being burdened by prohibitive costs.
Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving affordable access to performance spaces for non-profit performing arts groups in Maricopa.
This petition will be delivered to the next Maricopa City Council meeting on
