Urge Lincoln City Council to Allocate Funds for City-wide Splash Pads

The Issue

As a resident of Lincoln with a family to entertain and protect, I find the lack of free, fun, and cooling facilities during hot summers deeply concerning. With our economy and high inflation, finding a place nearby where I can entertain all my children for free on a hot day is priceless. Splash pads are a magical, joy-filled place for all children and families. Yet, they are deeply lacking in our community.

Increasing the presence of splash pads in Lincoln is more than just an entertainment issue. It is a matter of public health and inclusivity. According to the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, hot summer temperatures can result in heat-related illnesses, particularly among children. Splash pads offer a safe and accessible way to mitigate these effects without the need for costly admission to private swimming pools.

Furthermore, studies have shown that parks and play areas, such as splash pads, promote physical activity among children, improve mental wellbeing, and foster stronger community ties. Thus, installing more splash pads will directly contribute to our city’s goal of healthy, happy, and connected citizens.

Therefore, we encourage the Lincoln City Council to set aside funds for the installation of splash pads across the city as a measure to combat summer heat, promote health, and foster community. Let Lincoln shine as a city that values the wellbeing and happiness of all its residents. We urge you to consider this proposal for the improvement and enrichment of our community.
