Urge Katy ISD to Cancel School on January 16th Due to Severe Weather Conditions

The Issue

We are calling on the Katy Independent School District (ISD) to prioritize student safety by canceling school on Tuesday, January 16th. The majority of schools in our area have already taken this step due to the forecasted severe weather conditions. It is predicted that rain will fall the day before, leading to freezing conditions, snowfall and slippery roads. Furthermore, temperatures are expected to plummet, feeling as low as 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

These conditions not only make it challenging for students and staff members to commute safely but also pose a risk for those who need to wait outside for buses or walk home from school. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), weather-related vehicle accidents account for nearly 22% of all vehicle crashes in the U.S., with most occurring during winter conditions.

We believe that it is essential for Katy ISD's decision-making process regarding school closures due to inclement weather should always prioritize student safety above all else. Therefore, we urge you - parents, teachers, students and community members - sign this petition urging Katy ISD officials reconsider their decision and cancel school on January 16th due its potential risks associated with severe weather conditions.
