The Issue

On June 10th, 2026, The Jungle Box Children's Play Centre in Watermill Industrial Estate, Buntingford, Hertfordshire suffered a devastating fire. Among the facilities destroyed was a mini-zoo and pet corner that housed a range of animals, including meerkats, owls, giant tortoises, iguanas, genets, and even a 16ft snake.

Tragically, the fire resulted in the loss of all but one of these animals, as a baby tortoise was found a few days later in the ashes.

It has now transpired that there was no necessary council issued licence applied for or granted.

I am a resident of Hertfordshire, and this loss feels entirely avoidable and unnecessary.

The presence of animals in places like The Jungle Box centers around one purpose: human entertainment. While providing engaging environments for children is important, the welfare of captive animals should never be compromised in the process. Animals are not there for entertainment and financial gain. They are living beings with their needs and rights.

As The Jungle Box plans to rebuild its facilities, we urge them to reconsider including live animals in their offerings. There are numerous impactful ways to educate and entertain children without using animals. Interactive exhibits, videos, and simulated wildlife experiences can provide invaluable learning moments without the ethical concerns and risks live animals pose.

Turning our focus away from live exhibits can pave the way for a more humane, educational future for the play center, preserving resources and protecting living beings.

Please sign this petition to show your support for a Jungle Box rebirth that respects the ethical treatment of animals and ensures a safe, fun, and cruelty-free environment for our children and the community alike.
