Urge Jess Wilson and John Pesutto to support Victoria's Treaty process
The Issue
The journey towards Treaty in Victoria is one that promises recognition, reconciliation and a shared future with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is about truth-telling, practical outcomes, mutual respect and building stronger relationships for future generations.
For many years, the Victorian Treaty process had bipartisan support. That support continued until January 2024, when the Victorian Coalition withdrew its support for the process. This decision was made without prior engagement with First Nations leaders and immediately before January 26 — a time of profound significance for many Aboriginal people and many Victorians.
Many people in our community are deeply concerned that years of work and good-faith engagement could now be undermined. We are particularly concerned by public commitments from Jess Wilson and the Victorian Coalition to repeal, abolish or dismantle the Treaty process if elected. Such action would reverse years of work undertaken with First Nations communities and many Victorians.
Treaty is not simply symbolic. It has the potential to create pathways for practical improvements, including economic opportunities, cultural preservation, stronger relationships and greater social equity. It provides a framework for dialogue, accountability and a more inclusive future for all Victorians.
This petition comes directly from local constituents. We are members of the communities represented by Jess Wilson and John Pesutto, and we want our elected representatives to understand that support for Treaty remains substantial and active within their electorates.
Although our requests to meet have not been accepted, our representatives should know how many people across the nation support Treaty and want them to reconsider their position. Elected representatives have a responsibility to listen to their communities and the people more broadly and should hear the voices of those who continue to support reconciliation and Treaty.
We urge Jess Wilson and John Pesutto to reconsider their stance and renew their support for the Treaty process in Victoria. Their leadership could help bridge divisions and contribute to a future grounded in fairness, justice and respect.
Please sign this petition to show that support for Treaty remains strong, and to encourage our representatives to listen to their constituents and reconsider their position. Together, we can help build a more inclusive and equitable Victoria.
