The Issue

In my time working as an employee at Jackson’s Food Stores in Point Reyes, California, I encountered numerous customers who presented Mexican identification cards. The establishment's policy, at that time, refused to accept these IDs as a valid form of age verification for purchasing tobacco and nicotine products, alcohol, and lottery tickets. Point Reyes boasts a rich tapestry of cultural diversity, and it was disheartening to witness such a discriminatory practice targeting the Hispanic community.

Feeling compelled to voice what I believed was an unfair policy, I took to social media. The potential exclusion of a significant portion of our community seemed unjust. However, my actions led to my dismissal from Jackson's. Despite losing my job, I remain unwavering in my belief that people should not face barriers or discrimination based on their nationality, particularly in a time where inclusivity and acceptance are vital values.

To provide a seamless, fair, and inclusive customer experience, Jackson’s Food Stores should adapt their policies to accept Mexican identification cards. California's diverse population includes many who, for various reasons, may only have access to identification from their homeland. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, foreign-born individuals make up a significant portion of the state’s populace. Access to services and products without unnecessary hurdles should be a right, not a privilege.

Many companies and establishments within California already accept foreign IDs, including Mexican identification cards, as part of their commitment to serving the diverse communities in our state. Jackson’s Food Stores falling in line with these inclusive business practices not only boosts their community standing but also eradicates racial and cultural bias within the doors of their establishments.

This is a call for understanding and action. We ask Jackson’s Food Stores to acknowledge this issue and adopt a more inclusive identification policy. Join me in urging Jackson’s to inclusively serve our community by signing this petition. Together, we can foster a place that celebrates diversity and equality for all.
