Urge Isle of Wight Council to eliminate pesticide use
The Issue
Globally recognized, glyphosate, a commonly used pesticide, has been classified by the World Health Organization as a probable human carcinogen. This alarming fact emphasizes the urgency to eliminate its use, especially in places where vulnerable populations such as children frequently visit. Playgrounds, parks, schools, and public streets, unfortunately, continue to see the application of this hazardous substance, posing significant health risks. Our responsibility is to protect these innocent lives who are most susceptible to the harmful effects of such chemicals.
In our community on the Isle of Wight, families, and dog walkers frequently traverse routes that have been sprayed, unknowingly putting their health at risk. It's alarming that Island Roads' fact sheet, which should guide safe practices, claims that glyphosate has "little or no impact on animals". We need to address this misinformation and advocate for a future where pesticides no longer jeopardize our health and environment.
There are various alternative methods to manage weeds that are safe and effective. Techniques such as manual weeding, mulching, and the use of hot water or steam can be implemented without compromising public health. In numerous regions worldwide, cities have adopted pesticide-free practices with great success, demonstrating that it is actionable and achievable.
We call on the Isle of Wight Council to articulate a clear, actionable, and transparent plan to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of pesticides like glyphosate in public areas. The safety and well-being of our community should be the top priority. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for a healthier, safer environment for everyone, especially for our children and future generations. Join us in demanding necessary change and protecting our beautiful Isle of Wight from harmful chemicals. Please sign the petition to voice your support.
