Urge Indiana Lawmakers to Ban Inhumane Gestation Crates for Pigs
The Issue
In Indiana—one of the largest pork-producing states in the country—pregnant pigs are still being kept in crates so small they can’t turn around or lie down for months at a time. These “gestation crates” have been widely condemned by animal welfare experts and banned in nearly a dozen U.S. states. Yet here in Indiana, they remain legal.
Pigs are deeply intelligent and social animals. Confining them in steel cages for nearly their entire reproductive lives causes immense suffering, both physically and emotionally. They develop injuries, stress behaviors, and long-term health issues—all in the name of industrial efficiency.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
States like Ohio—also a top pork producer—have already taken meaningful, bipartisan steps to ban or phase out gestation crates. They’ve done so with the support of farmers, veterinarians, and animal scientists, proving that animal welfare and agriculture can go hand in hand.
Indiana has the chance to do the same. Our family farmers already work hard to care for their animals and communities. It’s time our laws reflected that care by moving away from outdated, inhumane practices.
We call on Governor Eric Holcomb and the Indiana General Assembly to pass legislation banning the use of gestation crates in our state. Let’s work together—rural and urban, conservative and liberal—to bring Indiana’s animal welfare standards into the 21st century.
Add your name now to demand a crate-free future for pigs in Indiana.
