Urge Harvard University to Revoke JD Vance’s Degree Due to Conduct Violations

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call upon Harvard University to take immediate action to revoke the Juris Doctor degree awarded to JD Vance. His recent actions and statements stand in direct opposition to the ethical standards and values that Harvard upholds.

Key Concerns:

  1. Support for Far-Right Extremism: On February 14, 2025, during the Munich Security Conference, Vice President Vance met with Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. This meeting occurred after Vance publicly criticized European leaders for excluding far-right parties from political discourse, effectively endorsing the AfD—a party widely recognized for its extremist views. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rebuked Vance’s remarks, emphasizing that Germany’s commitment to democracy is incompatible with supporting the AfD.
  2. Undermining Judicial Authority: Vice President Vance has publicly challenged the authority of the judiciary in relation to executive actions. In response to a federal judge’s decision blocking certain executive policies, Vance suggested that the judiciary overstepped its boundaries, implying that executive actions should not be subject to judicial review. Such statements undermine the foundational principle of checks and balances enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.
  3. Attacks on Free Press: Vice President Vance has exhibited a pattern of hostility toward the free press. Notably, he has promoted unfounded conspiracy theories and made inflammatory statements against journalists and media outlets. Such actions not only endanger journalists but also erode public trust in the media, a cornerstone of democratic society.

Harvard’s Standards:

According to Harvard Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) policies, the university reserves the right to rescind a degree if the recipient has engaged in conduct that calls into question their honesty, maturity, or moral character, or is otherwise inconsistent with the expectations set forth in Harvard’s policies.

Our Appeal:

JD Vance’s recent conduct, including his endorsement of extremist political figures, attempts to delegitimize the judiciary, and attacks on the free press, reflects a profound lapse in judgment and moral character. Such actions not only tarnish the reputation of Harvard University but also contradict the institution’s commitment to fostering leaders who uphold justice, equality, and democratic principles.

We urge Harvard University to uphold its standards of integrity and take decisive action by revoking JD Vance’s degree. This measure will reaffirm Harvard’s dedication to ethical leadership and its intolerance for conduct that undermines democratic institutions and values.
