Urge Greenwich council to support Eltham's Muslim community
The Issue
Eltham, a vibrant district in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, is home to a diverse community, including a significant number of Muslims who contribute to the rich cultural tapestry of the area. Yet, despite this presence, the Muslim community faces a significant challenge: the lack of a suitable place to perform their five daily prayers.
For Muslims, prayer is a cornerstone of their faith, and it is performed five times a day at specific times. The absence of a dedicated place for worship disrupts not only religious practices but also the social and communal cohesion that is central to the faith. This lack of facilities forces members of the community to travel long distances, often to Masjids in neighbouring areas, which is neither sustainable nor practical for daily observance.
In addition to serving as a place of worship, the proposed facility would play a vital role in supporting the wider wellbeing of the community, particularly young people. By providing a safe, welcoming, and structured environment, it would help steer children and youth away from negative influences such as street crime, gang involvement, and drug use. Instead, it would encourage positive values, discipline, and a sense of belonging, supporting them to grow into responsible, educated, and well-mannered individuals who contribute positively to society and the future of this country. Furthermore, this space would not be exclusive to the Muslim community alone. It would be open and inclusive, offering support to all residents of Eltham in need, including initiatives such as assistance for the homeless, and the provision of essential help such as food, clothing, and basic necessities. In this way, the facility would strengthen community cohesion and serve as a shared resource for the benefit of all.
We urge Greenwich council to recognize this pressing need and work collaboratively with the Muslim community to identify any unused spaces or properties that could be allocated for a prayer facility. Such a space could be offered as a long-term rental or lease, providing a stable and consistent location for worship and community gatherings. The allocation of a site for prayer would not only fulfill a religious necessity but also demonstrate the council’s commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and support for minority communities.
Several cities in the UK have successfully implemented similar initiatives, fostering greater social harmony and cohesion. For example, in 2019, the city of Bristol allocated an unused community centre to the local Muslim population for prayer and communal activities. Such proactive measures have not only enhanced intercultural relations but also enriched the social fabric of communities.
We believe that the Greenwich council has the opportunity to lead by example and show that it values the diverse needs of its constituents, ensuring that all faith groups have the facilities they need for worship. This act of support would not go unnoticed and could serve as a beacon of integration and cooperation for others to follow.
Please join us in calling upon the Greenwich council to support the establishment of a dedicated prayer space for the Muslim community in Eltham and its neighbouring areas. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a more inclusive and understanding community, where every member has the infrastructure needed to practice their faith freely and fully. Sign now and make a difference in fostering unity and respect among all residents of Greenwich.
