Urge Greek municipalities to provide accurate homelessness data

The Issue

As DES middle school students, we began a journey to help the homeless by starting an organization that provides meals, but we quickly stumbled upon a critical issue: the lack of reliable and comprehensive data on the real number of people experiencing homelessness in Greece. Realizing the magnitude of this gap, it became evident just how challenging it was to address the problems faced by these vulnerable individuals without access to accurate information.

Greece, like many countries, faces the complex and pressing issue of homelessness. However, without accurate data, policymakers and organizations, like ours, are deprived of the insights needed to allocate resources effectively and implement the most beneficial programs. Homelessness statistics often influence government policies, public awareness, and the allocation of funding. Still, when these numbers don't reflect reality, it undermines efforts meant to support those most in need.

A 2020 report by the FEANTSA, the European Federation of National Organisations Working with the Homeless, highlighted that Greece lacks a systemic approach to data collection concerning homelessness. As a result, we rely on fragmented and sometimes outdated information. This not only hinders local charities and organizations from delivering targeted help but also leaves the public poorly informed about the true scale of homelessness within our communities.

To address this, we call upon the municipalities across Greece and local research centers to develop a coordinated and thorough data collection process. Collaborative efforts should be made, including the deployment of surveys, collaboration with shelters and frontline organizations, and employing technology for real-time data gathering. Increasing transparency and accuracy in data collection not only helps organizations like ours but also ensures that the municipalities can develop targeted intervention strategies, allocate resources equitably, and ultimately work toward reducing homelessness.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a fundamental change that would profoundly increase our understanding of homelessness in Greece. Your signature will help encourage the municipalities and research centers to take these necessary steps forward. Let us work together to ensure that those experiencing homelessness in Greece are counted and their needs are not overlooked.
