Urge Greater Dandenong City Council to Develop a Rainbow Action Plan

Urge Greater Dandenong City Council to Develop a Rainbow Action Plan
The issue
Approximately 17,000 residents in Greater Dandenong identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer or asexual (LGBTIQA+).
But a report to Greater Dandenong City Council in December 2019 found that LGBTIQA+ residents feel excluded, ignored, invisible and isolated.
The 2019 report also found that LGBTIQA+ people in Greater Dandenong experience increased rates of victimisation, vandalisation, and threats.
We know that harassment and discrimination have a negative impact on LGBTIQA+ people’s health and wellbeing.
LGBTIQA+ people in Greater Dandenong continue to face significant discrimination and its negative impacts.
To address this, in February 2025, Greater Dandenong City Council launched an advisory committee specific to the LGBTIQA+ community.
Now it's time for Greater Dandenong City Council to work with their LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee to develop a Rainbow Action Plan dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTIQA+ residents and families.
This Rainbow Action Plan would identify areas of improvement, from promoting inclusivity to creating safe spaces, which are essential for the mental and emotional wellbeing of our community.
By developing a Rainbow Action Plan, the Council would affirm its commitment to promoting a sense of unity, respect, and dignity amongst all residents, regardless of their sexuality, sex characteristics, or gender identity.
This would enhance social cohesion and create a community where everyone genuinely feels valued, safe, and accepted.
Neighbouring councils like Monash and Casey have developed action plans for the LGBTIQA+ community, and Council already has an LGBTIQA+ Advisory Committee to guide this work.
Thus, to Greater Dandenong City Council, we urge you: develop a Rainbow Action Plan for a more supportive, inclusive, and understanding Greater Dandenong.
Let's make this a place where everyone can bloom.
