Urge Grand Saline ISD to allow responsible student phone use
The Issue
There's a real issue at Grand Saline ISD regarding our school district's current approach towards student phone usage. It's frustrating and concerning that students feel threatened to have their personal phones confiscated even in private areas such as bathroom stalls, particularly during times of crisis when communication access can be crucial.
When we have threats regarding our schools safety. I need my phone to contact the people that could help. Both of my parents are in law enforcement and could get to my school faster than anybody else can. I think we should end gun violence before you worry about whether or not I “actually need my phone.”
We acknowledge that the idea isn't to allow phones because of some perceived addiction or dependency. It's about having them when we genuinely need them for contacting parents, coordinating after-school activities, or accessing educational resources. Phones are essential tools rather than distractions when used responsibly.
What’s also crazy is the fact that teachers can get on their phone and scroll on Facebook or TikTok. Whenever I have a question about an assignment, I have to “wait until their video is over.” I don’t think it’s fair that teachers can have their phone when they’re supposed to be teaching and we can’t be on our phones after we’re done with an assignment, in Lunch, or even in the bathroom.
My experience highlights this issue: having my bag searched repeatedly to find a phone that wasn't even present was not only intrusive but a violation of my trust and privacy. It isn’t acceptable for my phone to be confiscated simply for being found in another student's possession. This practice isn't just disruptive; it disrespects our privacy and undermines trust between students and administration.
We propose a change in policy that permits responsible phone use at designated times and areas. This includes allowing phones during lunch breaks, in between classes, and in other low-distraction environments without causing disruption to the educational process. With clear guidelines and understanding between students and staff, phones can enhance the learning experience and provide peace of mind for both students and their families.
Grand Saline ISD has the opportunity to lead by example in recognizing that phones are not the problem – it's how they're managed within the school environment that needs a rethink. Join us in calling for a balanced, fair, and effective policy on student phone use. Sign this petition to urge Grand Saline ISD to implement rational and student-friendly phone regulations.
