Urge Governor to halt data center construction with a moratorium
The Issue
I live in Cedar Creek, TX, a tranquil area where the community thrives amidst nature and peace. However, my peaceful neighborhood is currently threatened by the construction of 23 data centers proposed by Edgeconnex. This rapid expansion could significantly alter the landscape and essence of our community.
Data centers are known for their high demands on energy and water resources, producing substantial noise pollution and disrupting the local environment. Large constructions of this nature can lead to increased traffic, strain on infrastructure, and a rise in utility costs. While data centers are essential for supporting our digital world, their unchecked proliferation poses a threat to smaller communities like mine.
Moreover, studies show that data centers have a profound effect on the environment. According to a report by the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers globally accounted for nearly 1% of the world's electricity demand in 2020. They also contribute significantly to carbon emissions. This impact is felt more intensely in areas where clusters of data centers are built, further exacerbating local environmental challenges.
We need to approach this growth responsibly by thoroughly assessing the long-term impacts of such developments in Cedar Creek and other similar communities across Texas. I am calling on the Governor to convene a special session of the State Legislature and institute a one-year moratorium on the construction of new data centers. This pause will provide a crucial window to evaluate the environmental, economic, and societal impact of these data centers and develop a sustainable plan for their integration.
By signing this petition, you advocate for responsible growth and protect Cedar Creek’s identity, environment, and future. Join me in urging our Governor to take immediate action for the sake of our community's wellbeing. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard.
