Urge Governor Murphy to Address the Overpopulation of Dogs in New Jersey Shelters

Urge Governor Murphy to Address the Overpopulation of Dogs in New Jersey Shelters
The Issue
We are deeply saddened and moved by the recent loss of two dogs during a snowstorm, a tragedy that underscores an ongoing issue in many of our NJ communities. The overpopulation of dogs in New Jersey animal shelters has passed critical levels. Shelters are overwhelmed, unable to continue intaking dogs that end up confined to crates, some stacked on top of each other. Heartbreakingly, owners who can no longer care for their pets due to various circumstances are resorting to abandonment because shelters simply cannot help.
Animal control officers find themselves caught between a rock and a hard place; they hope law enforcement will stop seizing dogs from unacceptable living conditions because there's nowhere left for these animals to go. This situation is unsustainable and requires immediate attention.
Shelters face financial constraints that prevent them from covering boarding costs to save the lives of dogs. The unfortunate consequence is the euthanization of dogs due to limited space. Regrettably, animal advocates are launching harsh attacks on both the shelters and their dedicated personnel. This relentless pressure is leading to compassion fatigue among shelter workers, resulting in departures or the search for employment elsewhere. The impact of these challenges is exacerbated by the negative environment on social media and the lack of the ability of local governments to intervene due to financial limitations.
We implore Governor Murphy not only to recognize this crisis but also to take decisive action by opening up a dialogue and "round table" discussions towards sustainable solutions that can be achieved with Executive Orders to help improve these conditions. We can no longer wait for the NJ Legislature to take 2 years to help these voiceless dogs, some of which are literally dying.
The lives lost during this last snowstorm were not just statistics - they were beloved companions whose tragic fate could have been prevented with appropriate intervention measures in place. We urge every member of our community - animal shelter staff members, volunteers, and pet owners alike - to join us as we voice our concerns about this dire situation directly to Governor Murphy.
