Urge governments to reform fox policies in Australia

The issue

In Australia, foxes are considered pests, and legislation enforces the eradication of this animal, often subjecting them to inhumane practices such as poisoning, shooting, and gassing to control their populations.  Legislation focusses mainly on protecting livestock and the commercial investments in agriculture.  Killing methods not only inflict unnecessary suffering on these animals but also raise ethical questions about our treatment of wildlife. Foxes are an introduced species, and it is not their fault that they have been brought into our country. They are omnivores, and hunt for food acting primarily out of survival instincts without malice towards the environment they inhabit.

Instead of pursuing violent control measures, governmental bodies at both the federal and state levels need to implement comprehensive reform in how we manage fox populations. A range of humane and responsible strategies should be embraced, beginning with the development and implementation of rehoming programs for orphaned foxes. These programs would offer these animals a chance at life. Programs such as these are already being successfully run in NSW and overseas.

Moreover, prohibitions on feeding foxes often exacerbate the problem rather than mitigate it, leading them to forage in hazardous locations and engage more frequently with native wildlife environments as they search for food. Encouraging responsible feeding programs and workshops to educate communities on coexisting with foxes could ease these problems.

Reform is not only necessary but achievable. A kinder, conservation-focused approach yields better long-term results and healthier ecosystems. The integration of proven strategies from conservation efforts worldwide, such as vaccination programs to manage population health, could replace cruel methods currently in use.

Let's urge our policymakers to revisit and revise their current stance on foxes. Encourage them to explore and commit to more humane and sustainable policies that respect and protect all forms of wildlife. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a significant and necessary shift in Australian animal management policies—making them more compassionate and scientifically informed. Your signature can help pave the way for a future where foxes are treated with the dignity they deserve. Please sign and support this cause for a cruelty-free coexistence.
