Urge Go Fund Me to Eliminate Processing Fees for California Wildfire Victims

The Issue

My fellow Angelenos and I count among the victims of the devastating California wildfires.

Far from being mere statistics, each one of us represents a life upended by this catastrophe.

In times of emergency, we rally together to help one another, proving that the resilience of our communities is stronger than any natural disaster.

Yet in our efforts to rebuild, we find ourselves faced with an unexpected obstacle – the processing fees imposed by Go Fund Me on donations.

Already burdened by the costs of displacement and recovery, these fees — which average 2.9% plus $.30 per donation, according to Go Fund Me's own website — detract valuable resources from the victims who are most in need. In fact, for a fundraising campaign that collects $10,000, approximately $300 will be siphoned off by these fees.

That's $300 that could have gone to replacing necessities, helping to reconstruct homes, or supporting families through this trying time.

In America, the MAJORITY of working people and families struggle to make their daily and monthly bills just to cover the BASICS. Many of us work multiple jobs just to make ends meet.

For the average American, $300 is a significant amount of money.

Go Fund Me fee's could make the difference for a family in Los Angeles being able to recover from this crisis.

This is why we are demanding Go Fund Me — a platform that has served as a lifeline for so many in the aftermath of disaster — stand with us by waiving these fees immediately. Furthermore, all fees collected thus far should be immediately redirected back to the people directly impacted by the wildfires.

By eliminating these processing charges, Go Fund Me can support us more directly, and ensure that the generosity of donors is fully directed to the people who need it most, rather than corporate coffers.

The people of Los Angeles, and those affected by the California wildfires, are asking for your solidarity - it only takes 60 seconds to sign our petition and share it with your community.

Anyone and everyone around the world can help us by taking a small action that could have a huge impact.

Sign this petition to call on Go Fund Me to waive their processing fees immediately and redirect all fees collected thus far back to the impacted wildfire victims, fostering a future where communities can truly come together in times of crisis, untethered by unnecessary need to uphold corporate profits in a time of mass devastation.
