Urge Georgia to enact remote notarization law and raise notary fees
The Issue
I am a dedicated notary public in Georgia, striving to make a decent living by providing essential services to our community. However, the outdated regulations surrounding notarization in our state are making it increasingly difficult for notaries like myself to sustain a viable livelihood. Currently, we are constrained by antiquated laws that limit our capacity to perform notarizations remotely and cap our notary fees at a mere $2.00 per notary stamp/signature. This situation is not only unfair to hard-working notaries but also hinders the adaptation and modernization of our practices to meet the demands of the 21st century.
Remote notarization is a practical solution that many states have already adopted, allowing notaries to perform their duties efficiently and securely via digital platforms. Implementing such a law in Georgia would not only streamline the notarization process but also extend critical services to individuals who may find it challenging to visit a notary physically due to health, mobility, or geographic constraints.
Furthermore, the current fee structure severely undervalues our work, disregarding the time, effort, and expertise involved in ensuring accurate and compliant notarizations. In comparison, neighboring states have fees that more accurately reflect the professional services provided. An increase in the maximum notary fee would bring Georgia in line with these standards, acknowledging the substantial contributions notaries make to various sectors, from legal proceedings to real estate transactions.
By enacting a remote notarization law and revising the notary fee structure, the Georgia State Government can empower notaries to better serve our community, while also fostering innovation and economic growth. It is time for Georgia to embrace progress and support those who dedicate themselves to upholding the integrity of important transactions.
