Urge Fairfax County to save Coordinating Council on Adults and Adults with Disabilities
The Issue
Since its inception, the Fairfax County Coordinating Council on Adults and Adults with Disabilities (CCAAD) has been an invaluable asset to our community. Over the past two decades, CCAAD has demonstrated its value by fostering public-private partnerships and spearheading innovative programs.
One testament to its success is the SPARC initiative (Specially Adapted Resources Clubs), which CCAAD members were instrumental in developing. With the partnership of the Fairfax County Department of Community Recreation Services, the first SPARC was opened in November 2006 at the Southgate Community Center in Reston, VA. Today, it has expanded its reach, operating in two community centers and serving 26 adults with disabilities.
Another success is Service Source's Care Mobile which provides roving on-site outdoor health and wellness programming, engaging community activities, and entertainment for older adults and adults with disabilities. Care Mobile originated as CCAAD's innovative Friend Mobile Program which was awarded and recognized by the County in 2021.
In 2002, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors made a commitment to create the CCAAD as a voice for older adults and adults with disabilities. This council speaks to the full continuum of aging and disability-related issues, ensuring that Fairfax remains a livable, inclusive county for all residents. However, a proposal to dissolve CCAAD undermines this commitment and risks leaving a vulnerable segment of our population without vital representation and support.
The services provided by CCAAD, like SPARC and Service Source, are not just about assistance; they are about empowerment and community integration. For many, these programs offer a lifeline, granting them opportunities to socialize, gain new skills, and actively participate in their community.
We cannot overlook the significance of CCAAD's contributions to our community. Dissolving the council would detract from the incredible progress made in social inclusion and support for adults with disabilities and older adults. It's imperative to acknowledge and reinforce the commitments we have made in the past to ensure a promising future.
We urge the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to renew and reaffirm its commitment to CCAAD. By supporting the council, the Board not only honors our history but also secures a livable, inclusive Fairfax for future generations. Join us in standing up for the CCAAD and the invaluable contributions it makes to our community.
Sign this petition to help preserve the Fairfax County Coordinating Council on Adults and Adults with Disabilities (CCAAD) and ensure the continuation of its vital programs and initiatives.
