Urge Employers to Implement Compassionate Leave for Pet Loss

The Issue

When my beloved dog Fudge fell gravely ill, I found myself torn between the priorities of my workplace's rules and the need to be with my loyal companion during his last moments. My employer expected me to carry on with my regular duties, watching my family member deteriorate over an 8-hour shift, and offered no provisions for compassionate leave in the case of a pet's death. This policy demanded that I either abandon Fudge or risk disciplinary action for taking sick leave.

Fudge was not just a pet, he was an integral member of our family. Like many, I struggled with grief and distress - emotions that are often overlooked when related to pet bereavement. According to the Journal of Mental Health, 9 out of 10 pet owners consider their pets as part of their families, and 30-50% experience intense emotional pain following pet death, similar to human bereavement. It is time we address this matter and regard pet loss with the gravity it merits.

This is a plea on behalf of all those who regard their pets as their family. We petition the employers, big and small, to understand the emotional hardship placed on their employees during these times and to initiate policies that allow for compassionate leave in the event of the loss of a pet. Support us in making workplaces more understanding and humane. Please, sign this petition.
