For over two decades, I have called Hermitage, Edmonton, my home. Our community has thrived, undeterred by the challenges that come our way. But lately, a new issue is striking at the heart of our community - the introduction of bike lanes.

It's not just the bike lanes that bother us, it's the fact that our local government, the Edmonton City Council, expects homeowners to shoulder half the costs of sidewalks and light post upgrades while our taxes are being invested in these scarcely used bike lanes. This decision fails to consider the significant financial burden it imposes on the homeowners; a community where the median family income is among the lowest in the city.

This situation is not just about the bike lanes. It's about the lack of forethought in the city's planning. It's about disregarding the concerns and financial struggles of the people who live here. This is evidenced in the recent revitalization project when the city could have provided upgrades to our sidewalks and light posts, essential amenities for our community, without further burdening us financially. Instead, the community's needs were overlooked, and the funds were funneled into bike lanes we hardly use. In addition, with the introduction of bike lanes, parking spaces are now scarce, causing further inconvenience to us residents.

We value progress, but not at the expense of our immediate needs and financial stability. We urge the Edmonton City Council to reconsider the approach to bike lanes in our community. Prioritize homeowner needs, community infrastructure and financial feasibility before expanding the bike lane network. We refuse to be sidestepped in decisions that impact us directly. Stand with us, sign this petition and help us make the council hear our voices. Sign the petition today.
