Urge Disney to Create a Habesha Princess
Urge Disney to Create a Habesha Princess
The Issue
I am a Habesha person and growing up, I always admired the strong and beautiful princesses that Disney introduced to the world. Tiana and the girl from "Wish" are both characters that I appreciate deeply, however, I could not help but yearn for a princess that truly represented my Ethiopian or Eritrean roots. Such a character would not only provide Habesha children with representation they could identify with, but also help create more awareness about the unique cultures and histories of the African continent.
The Disney Princess franchise is a powerful social force, its influence extends to hundreds of millions of children worldwide. It is important to note that Disney has, within its lineup, princesses of different ethnicities, imparting a diversity which is commendable yet incomplete. For there is yet to be representation for the unique culture and stories of Ethiopia and Eritrea, home to over 114 million people combined (World Population Review, 2021).
Inspired icons like the Queen of Sheba/Makeda or Empress Tayitu can provide a rich historical background for such a character, giving young viewers a valuable glimpse into ancient and regal African civilizations. African countries have been historically underrepresented in global displays of culture and heritage. Authentic representation can play a catalytic role in changing this, educating and inspiring the future generations.
Disney's commitment to diversity was reaffirmed with the creation of characters like 'Moana', which positively portrayed unique Indigenous Polynesian culture. It is time to continue that commitment by representing the histories and cultures of Ethiopia and Eritrea through an inspiring Habesha princess.
We believe that such a princess will not only inspire Habesha children but will also contribute to a more inclusive global narrative about African heritage and culture. Sign this petition to urge Disney to create a Habesha princess and to contribute to the positive representation and celebration of diverse cultures on a global platform.
