Urge Discord to Improve Account Recovery by Allowing Additional Proof of Ownership.

Urge Discord to Improve Account Recovery by Allowing Additional Proof of Ownership.
The Issue
I lost access to my Discord account overnight. I lost it due to losing access to the original email address and said email provider does not provide email recovery. Many of you have experienced this, it may be from losing the email due to it being a school or business email. Hacking incidents where you lost the email address.
Whatever the reason may be that you lost access to said email address and thus Discord is saying "Since you no longer have access to that email, we're not able to proceed on our end." - Word for word by a Discord Support agent via Discord Support Ticket.
Despite YEARS of messages, servers, linked phone number, back up codes, and paid Discord Nitro Subscriptions with bank statements and receipts. I was told the account was unrecoverable.
This is happening to thousands, if not more, of Discord users.
Every day, legitimate users are permanently locked out of their Discord accounts due to rigid recovery rules that don't allow alternative proof of ownership.
For many of us, a Discord account contains:
- Years of friendships, communities, personal message history, and business'
- Server Ownership and moderation responsibilities.
- Paid purchases of Nitro Subscriptions, Server Boosts, and Account Cosmetics
Losing an account isn't just inconvenient but it can mean losing years of digital identity with no meaningful appeal process. Many people experience a feeling of loss and grief from losing these accounts.
What Is Wrong?
Discord's current account recover system depends on a meager number of verification methods. If a user loses access to their original email address and seeks help from Discord support, the account is often considered permanently lost. Even if the user can clearly demonstrate ownership via additional proof.
Many affected users can still provide:
- Proof of Discord payments or Nitro subscriptions
- Past usernames, account creation details, and server history
- Previously linked phone numbers or email addresses
- Consistent device or regional login history
Yet there is no supported way to submit this information.
What We're Asking Discord to Do:
We are calling on Discord to add a secure, manual account recovery option or secure account recovery options with Discord Support that allows users to verify ownership using additional evidence, such as;
- Transaction IDs or bank/card statements used for Discord purchases
- Previously linked contact information
- Account history and long-term usage patterns
- A structured review process for account recovery cases
This recovery path can be limited, carefully reviewed, and protected with strict anti-fraud safeguards. We are NOT asking Discord to weaken their security but rather to modernize it.
Why This Matters:
- Long time Discord users are the most likely to be affected
- Permanent account loss undermines trust in the platform
- Other major online platforms already offer multi-step ownership verification
Many major online platforms such as Microsoft, Epic Games, Steam, Twitter, etc. will offer many other ways for ownership verification by having their account recovery include bank statements, recent order confirmation number, last 4 digits of a card last used or was used before a specific time, and even using things such as back up codes or phone code verification.
Discord thrives on community. Giving users a fair chance to recover their account protects those communities and shows respect for loyal users.
Take Action
If you've ever:
- Lost access to a Discord account
- Been denied recovery despite being the rightful owner
- Worried about losing years of messages, servers, or purchases
- Have or Had a friend/loved one go through this process only to be denied by Discord Support
Please sign and share this petition. Together, we can push for a safer, fairer Discord account recovery system.

I'm signing because Discord should allow proof of ownership beyond a single email or 2FA method.
