The Issue

At DePaul University, students founded a group dedicated to providing essential sexual and reproductive health resources to their peers—because the university itself does not offer contraception or emergency birth control on campus. That group, formerly affiliated with Planned Parenthood Generation Action, was known for distributing condoms, hosting sex education events, and supporting students in navigating safe, informed choices.

In June, DePaul University revoked the group’s status as an official student organization, citing its affiliation with Planned Parenthood. Since then, the group has operated off-campus under the name “Students United for Reproductive Justice,” continuing to fulfill unmet needs through a discreet network that includes contraception delivery and peer support. Still, without recognized status, they are cut off from campus resources, funding, and the ability to reach students who need them most.

DePaul is a Catholic institution, and its values are central to its identity. But the student body is diverse—religiously, culturally, and personally. Many students at DePaul do not share the same beliefs about contraception, and even those who do may still need access to medically recommended resources for their health and safety.

By denying this group recognition, DePaul is not just enforcing a religious stance. It is denying students a platform to care for one another in a way that is legal, safe, and responsive to real community needs.

We are calling on DePaul University’s administration to reinstate Students United for Reproductive Justice as a recognized student organization. Their work is consistent with academic freedom, student well-being, and the university’s stated mission to care for the whole person.

Letting students advocate for their health—and for each other—is not a threat to DePaul’s values. It’s a reflection of them.

Add your name to urge DePaul to reinstate this student group and affirm the right of all students to organize, educate, and access reproductive health support.
