Urge DEFRA to lift import ban on unpasteurised cheeses under three months

Urge DEFRA to lift import ban on unpasteurised cheeses under three months
The Issue
The recent UK import ban by DEFRA on unpasteurised cheeses aged less than three months is not just a regulatory measure but a direct hit to small independent cheese retailers like us. Our stores have been our pride and joy; they are a small corner of the world where artisanal craft and tradition meet the tables of our loyal customers. Many of us are already struggling to cope with rising costs and fluctuating stock prices. Now, this ban threatens to further destabilise our businesses.
Since June, consumers in the UK have been deprived of beloved cheeses such as Brie de Meaux, Camembert, and Vacherin Mont D'Or, which are particularly cherished, especially during the festive period that’s right around the corner. It's disheartening to watch our shelves empty as the holidays approach, a time when we rely heavily on these imports for our year-end sales.
The reason cited for this ban is an outbreak of lumpy skin disease (LSD) in France, and France's consequent declassification as being free from LSD. However, it's important to understand that LSD is a disease affecting cattle, transmitted through insect bites, not through the food chain. Crucially, it is non-communicable to humans. Despite the outbreak, all other European nations continue to enjoy unpasteurised cheeses with no adverse effects on public health.
Maintaining this ban, therefore, seems unnecessary, especially given the exhaustive safety protocols already embraced by cheese producers and retailers. Lifting this ban in the UK will align our policies with those of our European neighbours and alleviate the pressure on small businesses dependent on these crucial imports.
We implore DEFRA to review this ban with urgency and consider the broader economic implications on independent retailers and their communities. Your support is vital in urging DEFRA to lift this ban, ensuring that traditional and culturally significant cheeses remain accessible for everyone.
Please sign this petition to support our cause and help safeguard the livelihoods of countless small businesses as well as celebrate the tradition and joy of enjoying quality cheese.
