Urge Culver City City Council to Help Fund Our Public Schools

The Issue

Right now, our city government is in the midst of budget discussions, a critical time during which they must focus on investing responsibly in our community.

Our Culver City Unified School District (CCUSD) is central to our community. Young families cite the public schools as a main reason why they choose to live here, and they pay a premium to do so. Unfortunately, our schools are in danger - facing fiscal challenges that threaten the district's ability to deliver a high-quality educational experience to every student.

By offering a one-time grant to assist in stabilizing the district's fiscal position, the City Council has the unique opportunity to affirm their commitment to education and community welfare. It's not just a monetary investment; it's a declaration that education is a priority for Culver City and its future. The City Council’s support could help prevent further program cuts, larger class sizes, and layoffs of our valuable educators and staff.

We know that the funding exists to make this possible. After all, a majority of the City Council has directed city staff to allocate an astounding $20,000,000 of public funds to a private housing development ($16,000,000 in addition to a previously spent $4,000,000). But, to date, they refuse to even agendize a discussion to explore providing essential financial support to our public schools. This is a travesty.

Let's prioritize investing in our public schools, above giving money away to private interests. Investing in education benefits everyone in our community, and the city will see a return on that investment as young families choose to make Culver City their home. Please urge the City Council to shift their focus and provide much-needed financial support to our local public schools.

We ask that you:

(1) sign this petition to demand action from the Culver City City Council in the form of a one-time grant of funds to CCUSD, ensuring they understand that our community values education and the difference it makes in the lives of students and families; and

(2) email a public comment to the Culver City City Council, at city.council@culvercity.org (copy the city manager at john.nachbar@culvercity.org and public.comment@culvercity.org). Share with them your personal reasons for requesting support for CCUSD! Feel free to copy us at fundculvercityschools@gmail.com if you would like.

(3) make public comment live at their meeting on Monday, June 9, at 7:00pm. You can attend in person at City Hall (9770 Culver Blvd, Culver City, 90232), or on Zoom (follow instructions on this page - https://www.culvercity.org/City-Hall/Meetings-Agendas)
