The Issue

Having personally experienced the destructiveness of legal disputes within the real estate industry, I am deeply troubled by the ongoing litigation between the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB), the REALTORS® Association of Edmonton (RAE), and the Alberta Real Estate Association (AREA). Such conflicts not only tarnish the reputation of our profession but also drain valuable resources that could be better allocated to initiatives that benefit REALTORS® and the communities we serve.

In my tenure as a REALTOR®, I have witnessed firsthand how these legal battles rarely lead to productive outcomes for any party involved. Instead, they consume enormous amounts of financial resources—often reaching into the hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars—funds which originate from members' dues. Such expenditures are a significant burden on our professional community, diverting attention and funds away from essential services and member support initiatives.

Moreover, the public perception of REALTORS® is at stake. The industry is built on trust and credibility, and ongoing public disagreements between our governing bodies weaken the respect and confidence that clients place in us. It's imperative for our leadership to demonstrate unity and collaboration, setting an example of professionalism and dedication to our shared mission.

I propose a two-fold solution: First, CREB and RAE should retract their statements against AREA and issue sincere apologies. This would not only restore some degree of goodwill but also pave the way for open dialogue. Second, AREA should withdraw its litigation against CREB and RAE, facilitating an environment where real discussions about reconciliation and progress can take place.

It’s time for these esteemed organizations to exhibit real leadership. By working collectively, they can focus on common goals, such as enhancing professional standards, advocating for better housing policies, and supporting REALTORS® in their vital work, rather than being entangled in costly legal proceedings.

I urge CREB, RAE, and AREA to seize this opportunity to rebuild their relationships, foster collaboration, and lead by example for the benefit of all members and the communities we serve. Together, let’s create a unified front that truly reflects the integrity and dedication inherent in our profession.

Please sign this petition to encourage CREB, RAE, and AREA to resolve their differences and unite towards a more promising future for every REALTOR® in Alberta.
