Urge congress to create harsher punishments in animal abuse cases
Urge congressional leaders and other congressional members to allow judges to sentence animal abusers with harsher punishments.
As many of us know, the punishments for animal abusers are not as strict as they could or should be. There are many reasons to tighten the reigns on this type of crime least of which includes the fact that they could repeat the crime if proper provocation is present. We believe that this type of crime should not be played down but given much harsher punishments.
Many people think "Oh. Well it's only an animal that this person hurt/ killed. Why such a big deal?" The big deal?! The big deal is that these criminals can and will become a danger to the general public if provoked. Today an animal, tomorrow another animal, and the next day, a child or adult. If we do not hand down harder time behind bars, if they receive any at all under the current system, these criminals will never straighten themselves out.
Also, many criminals, who commit much pettier crimes, receive harsher punishments from judges everyday. It seems that many animal abusers get away with there crimes with nothing more than fines and community service nowadays. These criminals need to be given hard times behind bars to ensure that they will not repeat this crime for a set amount of time and also that they realize how serious their crime was and always will be. Without hard time criminals may think that they got away with the crime or that it wasn't a serious crime and, therefore, repeat the crime.
These are just a few out of many reasons why there should be tougher sentences handed to animal abusers but these reasons are only the tip of the iceburg. We need this type of crime to be confronted head on with reasonable but harsh punishments before another helpless and innocent animal falls victim to this senseless act of violence.
