Urge College Board to Reschedule PSAT from Yom Kippur
The Issue
We represent JewsInSchool, a coalition of Jewish parents, teachers, and faculty who believe in creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere for Jewish students in their educational journey. We are deeply troubled that the College Board has scheduled the PSAT on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. This day, marked by fasting and as a Shabbat day, is not just of religious significance, but also deeply rooted in our cultural identity.
Yom Kippur is profoundly spiritual, and it is neither equitable nor empathetic to make our children choose between observing a sacred day or their academic pursuits. It is crucial to remind that over five million Jews live in the United States, each one deserving of proper recognition and accommodations for observing their holy days (Pew Research Center, 2021).
We are therefore urging College Board to reconsider this oversight and reschedule the PSAT in a manner that respects the practices and traditions of Jewish students. Your support can ensure that all students, irrespective of their religious affiliations, receive equal opportunities to their academic success. Please sign the petition and let College Board know that our students shouldn't have to choose between their faith and their education.
