Cesar Millan, widely known for his television programme as the "Dog Whisperer", is scheduled to speak at Clubpets' Pet Event this August. We are concerned that this platform may promote dog training concepts that are inconsistent with current scientific understanding of canine behaviour and welfare.

Cesar Millan's training philosophy has long been associated with dominance theory and "pack leader" concepts. These ideas are inconsistent with the recommendations of leading veterinary behaviour organisations, such as the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behaviour (AVSAB), whose position statement advocates reward-based, evidence-based training and advises against using dominance hierarchy theory as the basis for behaviour modification.

Over the past two decades, research in animal behaviour and learning has significantly advanced our understanding of how dogs learn and respond to their environment. Today, leading veterinary behaviourists, animal welfare organisations, and certified behaviour professionals widely recommend reward-based, humane training methods that prioritise the dog's emotional well-being while reducing fear, stress, and anxiety.

Providing a platform for training philosophies that are inconsistent with this scientific consensus may mislead pet guardians into believing that outdated concepts remain best practice. This risks undermining ongoing efforts to promote evidence-based education and animal welfare.

We are also concerned that inviting a speaker whose public training philosophy differs from current evidence-based recommendations may weaken public confidence in professional standards within Singapore's animal care sector, including the evidence-based direction promoted by the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) through its accreditation and welfare initiatives.

We respectfully call on Clubpets to champion science-based education by reconsidering this invitation and instead featuring speakers whose work reflects current evidence in canine behaviour, learning, and welfare.
