Urge City Power, Eskom and Johannesburg Municipality to Halt Loadshedding in Ward 97

Urge City Power, Eskom and Johannesburg Municipality to Halt Loadshedding in Ward 97

The Issue

As residents of Honeydew, Roodepoort in South Africa, we are personally affected by the constant power outages in our area. From the start of January 2024, we have collectively more than 80 hours of unplanned outages thus far, excluding loadhedding hours.

The frequent power outages, most often trips and cable theft during loadshedding has created unnecessary stress and anxiety for us. Besides the severe psychological toll this takes on residents, this is a tremendous financial burden, as it not only displaces us as residents, but causes food to spoil, loss of income and many more issues.

Ward 97 is plagued with cable theft, inadequate infrastructure and decaying facilities which contribute significantly to these power outages. We appeal to City Power and Eskom, along with the City of Johannesburg Municipality, to suspend loadshedding in our ward.

The impact on our daily lives is profound - from disrupted sleep patterns due to irregular power supply at night, through loss of productivity during daytime blackouts. This situation is not sustainable or acceptable.

Furthermore, we would like to point out that at the current rate of cable theft, this cannot be financially viable for City Power, as our area has outages on average every second day. The cost of replacing cables and appointing contractors for repairs so often, cannot be financially sustainable for the entity either.

We urge you not only for a temporary suspension but also for a long-term solution that addresses the root causes such as cable theft and infrastructure decay. We need your commitment towards investing in robust infrastructure that can withstand these challenges.

We have collated some City Power fault tickets from this year alone to highlight the many outages we have experienced this year so far. Please note, that these tickets are only from 01/01/2024, collected from residents in the Honeydew area.
