The Issue

Charleston County is known for its diverse and vibrant community, yet the current 287(g) agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) threatens the very fabric of this unity. By allowing ICE to conduct operations within Charleston County, this agreement undermines the trust and safety of immigrant families who contribute significantly to our local economy and cultural landscape.

The 287(g) program was designed to delegate immigration enforcement authority to state and local law enforcement agencies. However, its implementation in Charleston County has led to unnecessary fear and division within our community. Families are living in constant anxiety of separation and countless individuals are forced into hiding, deterring them from accessing essential services such as healthcare and education.

Statistics have shown that areas which have terminated the 287(g) agreement experience increased cooperation between immigrant communities and law enforcement, leading to safer neighborhoods. Furthermore, counties that have ceased participation in this program have reported a decrease in crime and a stronger sense of community solidarity.

We propose that the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office immediately withdraw from the 287(g) agreement. By doing so, we would be taking a crucial step towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment for all residents. Ending this program will help restore trust with immigrant community members, ensuring they feel secure to engage with law enforcement without fear of deportation.

We call on Charleston County authorities to recognize the harm these practices inflict on our families and to prioritize humane policies that protect the wellbeing of all community members. Let us work together to build a more welcoming Charleston County.

Join us in urging the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office to withdraw from the 287(g) agreement and to renew our community's commitment to diversity, safety, and equality. Sign this petition and stand with us in making Charleston County a place where everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
