Urge Champaign Park District to Replace Annual Plants With Perennial Natives

The Issue

The biodiversity of our parks plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy environment. Right now, Champaign Park District frequently replaces annual, non-native plant species which need to be replaced every year. These practices are not only cost-ineffective but also disrupt local ecosystems. Perennial natives, on the other hand, can enhance our local biodiversity and help to sustain local insects, birds, and wildlife. They require less watering and care since they are adapted to our climate, which can reduce maintenance cost while boost the district's ecological health. The University of Delaware’s research suggests that native plants are far better than non-natives at supporting local ecosystems (University of Delaware, 2013). By replacing annual plants with perennial natives, we can protect our natural heritage and enhance the health and beauty of Champaign parks. Let's urge the Champaign Park District to make this important change. Please sign this petition and make a stand for our local environment.
