Over the past few months, the booking system at Tidy Tips managed by Central Bedfordshire Council has proved to be a hardship for many of our fellow citizens. The current system brings not only an initial hurdle for those without internet access or familiarity with online booking systems, but also significant delays to public access. According to a 2019 Office for National Statistics report, approximately 10% of the UK population (5 million people) does not have internet access, including Bedfordshire residents. By using a booking system, the council unintentionally excludes these residents, particularly elders and lower-income households, from using the Tip. This restricts their ability to dispose of waste responsibly and encourages illegal dumping. We need council action to revise the system by abolishing the online booking or introducing walk-in slots.
