The Issue

Growing up in Brampton, Ontario, I never had to worry about where my next meal was coming from. As an 18-year-old student, I find myself facing a world where children my age in Somalia, South Sudan, and Afghanistan wake up every day with the pain of hunger and uncertainty. Learning about these situations changed me profoundly. As Canadians, we are privileged to not face such dire circumstances daily, yet with that privilege comes a responsibility. I refuse to stay silent while millions suffer and starve across the globe.

Currently, millions of children die from hunger every day in regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, primarily due to a lack of food security. Canada, being a prosperous nation, has the capacity to make a significant impact, yet it falls short of the United Nations foreign aid target of 0.7% of its Gross National Income (GNI). In 2022, Canada contributed only a fraction, standing at approximately 0.3% of its GNI, which is insufficient given the scale of the global hunger crisis.

Increasing Canada's foreign aid budget specifically towards food security programs in these hardest-hit regions can change lives and futures. According to the World Food Programme, every dollar spent on nutrition-related interventions in these areas can save up to 16 times in future healthcare costs, educational improvements, and increased productivity. Thus, investing in food security is not just an act of compassion but also a strategic economic decision.

We urge the Canadian government to prioritize this issue and re-evaluate our foreign aid contributions. By committing to the UN's target of 0.7%, Canada can lead by example and inspire other nations to follow suit, fostering a global environment where no child has to go to bed hungry.

Signing this petition means standing up for children who deserve a chance to grow, learn, and thrive. Together, let's urge Canada to step up its contribution to global food security. Please sign and help us make a difference.
