Urge Canada and Alberta to ban strychnine use for ground squirrels
The Issue
I am writing this petition out of deep concern for the inhumane treatment and unnecessary suffering being inflicted on ground squirrels and other wildlife in Canada and Alberta due to the use of the poison strychnine. Strychnine is an indiscriminate and inhumane poison that causes prolonged suffering, including severe muscle convulsions, distress, and death by asphyxiation. What is particularly horrifying is that animals poisoned with strychnine remain fully conscious throughout this agonizing process.
This petition urgently calls for the government of Canada and Alberta to cease the use of strychnine for controlling ground squirrel populations. Not only does this poison cause great agony to its intended targets, but it also poses a grave threat to non-target wildlife. Birds of prey, foxes, coyotes, and other animals that may consume poisoned bait or carcasses suffer secondary poisoning, effectively perpetuating a cycle of wildlife harm and ecological imbalance.
In Canada, wildlife plays a vital role in our ecosystem. Birds of prey and other predators help control rodent populations naturally. However, when strychnine poisons these natural allies, it disrupts our delicate ecosystem balance, leading to unintended and harmful consequences. Many scientists and wildlife experts assert that there are more humane and effective methods to control ground squirrel populations, such as habitat modification, exclusion techniques, and alternative non-lethal deterrents.
Numerous studies have highlighted the danger of strychnine to non-target species and the environment. According to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative, secondary poisoning of non-target species due to strychnine is a significant concern, contributing to the decline of certain bird populations. Furthermore, Alberta has already initiated steps to evaluate and reduce the impact of strychnine; this petition urges the completion of these commitments in conjunction with the federal government to protect our precious wildlife and natural habitats.
Sign this petition to demand action and push for sustainable, ethical, and humane approaches in managing wildlife populations. By aligning with responsible practices, we can ensure that both humans and animals thrive in harmony without resorting to heartless and harmful methods. Together, we can advocate for policies that protect Canada's ecological integrity and demonstrate true stewardship of our environment. Please sign to show your support and make a difference.
