Urge BSD to stop enforcing educational website use
The Issue
I am a concerned student who finds the mandatory use of websites like Lexia, Aleks, and Delta Math more of a hindrance than a help in my education. These platforms, while designed with the intent of enhancing learning, have transformed learning into a stressful competition at our school. Some teachers have turned these websites into a contest, and our school holds a quarterly competition where the prize is an extra recess and a stuffed fish for the classroom. While this might sound fun, it places unnecessary stress on students, overshadowing the educational experience.
My peers and I end up feeling pressured to meet a weekly quota set by these platforms. If we fall short, our parents receive emails, which escalates the stress. To many of us, these practices feel more like punitive measures rather than beneficial educational tools. It is demoralizing to engage with poorly designed websites that leave us feeling inadequate, rather than curious and encouraged to learn more. Our concerns are not merely subjective feelings; various studies show that stress in school-aged children can significantly impact mental health and academic performance.
Excessive screen time associated with these platforms is another issue. It is well-documented that too much screen time can lead to eye strain, sleep problems, and decreased academic engagement. Our educational journeys should be about more than just meeting set quotas; they should inspire genuine curiosity and a love for learning.
I am urging the BSD to reconsider the mandatory use of these educational websites, and instead, focus on alternative teaching methods that encourage active participation and intrinsic motivation. Interactive group activities, hands-on projects, and a balanced curriculum can provide more comprehensive educational value than these platforms offer. Let's build a learning environment that fosters true understanding and critical thinking, rather than one overwhelmed by stress-inducing competitions.
Please consider signing this petition to help reduce unnecessary stress and improve our learning environment by advocating for a change in how educational technology is implemented in our school. Your support can encourage a more thoughtful approach to integrating technology into education, one that truly benefits students more holistically. Sign now to join the movement towards a healthier, more supportive academic environment for all students.
