Urge Billionaires and Plastic Producers to Fully Fund The Ocean Cleanup by 2025

Urge Billionaires and Plastic Producers to Fully Fund The Ocean Cleanup by 2025
The Issue
For love of our world's oceans, our awe-inspiring marine life, and an undeniable faith in the potential of humanity to accomplish great things, this petition seeks definitive action. A resident of this planet, I am deeply dismayed by the state of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and driven to spur expedited action for its clean-up.
The company, The Ocean Cleanup, currently aims to clean 90% of the Pacific Garbage Patch by 2040. Their goal is admirable, but with additional funding, the timeline could drastically improve. The current need is 4 billion dollars to complete the clean-up in just 5 years. The scope of the task is formidable, but this figure comes down to four generous billionaires or several corporations answering the call to action — corporations, notably, that include prominent plastic producers.
“Why should billionaires have to pay for it? Shouldn’t we just tax the companies making all the plastic?”
Great point. We agree that plastic producers should pay. But here’s the thing: policy is slow and the ocean doesn’t have time. Governments are dragging their feet. Until that changes, someone has to move. And billionaires? They can. Easily.
Our marine ecosystems are under immense strain due to plastic pollution. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch alone covers an estimated area twice the size of Texas or three times the size of France. This oceanic landfill doesn't only destroy the natural beauty of our seas but also presents a significant threat to our marine life.
We, therefore, implore those with the power to make a difference - those billionaires who could consider this cause an investment in our planet's future, and the corporations adding to the pollution via their use of plastics. Help us expedite this necessary initiative by funding The Ocean Cleanup's task to its completion by 2025. Our oceans, and therefore our world's future generations, depend largely on your actions to make this possible.
By signing this petition, you will join a growing chorus urging those with the necessary resources to take a stand for our oceans, marine life, and our collective faith in humankind’s potential for positive action. Please sign this petition today.
