The issue

For over 13 years, Hatem Yekta has endured an existence in the shadows within Australia's immigration detention system. As a Kurdish journalist and human rights advocate, I have watched his case unfold with mounting alarm. What began as a bureaucratic holding pattern for a refugee seeking safety has devolved into a grave infringement on dignity and human rights. This is not merely a case number or file in the system: this is a human life on the brink.

Hatem Yekta, a Kurdish refugee, has seen his health deteriorate alarmingly due to prolonged confinement. The physical and psychological toll of over a decade in detention is harrowing, exemplifying the urgent need for intervention. His suffering is a testament to the broader failure of current immigration procedures that prioritize process over people. It is imperative that the Australian Government and the Department of Home Affairs recognize the human cost of their inaction.

We call on Australian authorities to conduct an immediate review and resolution of Hatem Yekta’s case. He must be afforded urgent medical and psychological care to address the dire state of his health. But most importantly, he should be provided with a safe and permanent solution that respects his inherent human rights and dignity.

Hatem Yekta’s 13-year ordeal must end. It is time for Australia to honor its commitments to human rights and take decisive action. Let not another day go by with this injustice unaddressed. We urge you, fellow advocates for justice, compassion, and humanity, to stand with Hatem. Sign this petition and implore the Australian government to act now before it is too late.
