The Issue

As a mother of an adult son who is autistic, I am familiar with the challenges and experiences of individuals who are often labeled inappropriately. I have seen the strength, intelligence, and compassion in my son and in others who have faced similar challenges. However, the term "retarded," once used to describe intellectual or developmental disabilities, has become antiquated and offensive, carrying a stigma that can be deeply hurtful.

The organization Association for Retarded Citizens (ARC) is widely recognized for its efforts in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. However, its name still includes outdated terminology that no longer reflects the respect and dignity we owe to these individuals.

This term is a relic of a less inclusive time, and its continued use hampers ARC's ability to fully embrace the values of equality and respect. In our current world, which strives towards greater inclusivity and political correctness, we believe it's imperative to update the language we use.

The Public Health Agency of Canada reports that using person-first language can significantly affect how individuals with disabilities are perceived in society. This change will not only align with modern values but also send a strong signal of respect and acceptance.

If ARC updates its name to one that is respectful and modern, it will continue to stand as a beacon of support and advocacy but will do so with language that reflects the current understanding and respect owed to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Let's support positive change and urge ARC to adopt a name that recognizes the dignity, capability, and potential of the individuals it serves. Your signature can help us make this crucial change happen.

Please sign this petition to encourage ARC to evolve with the times and make a name change that respects those it diligently serves. Thank you!
