Urge Apple to Offer Accessible Software Updates for Autistic Users

Urge Apple to Offer Accessible Software Updates for Autistic Users
The Issue
To: Apple Team,
We, the undersigned, are writing to express our concerns about how drastic changes in Apple’s software updates impact autistic users with special needs. While these updates are intended to enhance user experience, they often disrupt the daily lives of those who rely on consistency and predictability in their technology.
For example, my 5-year-old autistic son, Luke, depends on the Apple Photos app for regulation and comfort. He struggles with severe panic and anxiety and relies on familiar pictures and videos to help him stay calm. A recent software update removed the back button in photo albums—a small change for most users but a devastating one for my son. This disruption caused a severe meltdown, rendering his phone unusable for him. Luke has developmental delays and cannot understand why his trusted tools have suddenly changed.
After the update, I discovered there is no straightforward way to downgrade the software without extensive technical expertise. This situation is incredibly frustrating for families like mine who already face numerous challenges in navigating a world not built with their needs in mind.
We urge Apple to consider implementing accessible updates that meet the needs of autistic users with special needs by offering:
- Customization Options: Allow users to opt out of drastic visual or functional overhauls.
- Consistency: Preserve familiar layouts, navigation tools, and features to ensure users feel secure.
- Simplified Notifications: Create a clearer, less intrusive system to manage update reminders and prevent accidental updates (as happened with my son).
- Predictability: Ensure updates don’t disrupt essential tools users rely on for their routines.
- Opt-In Features: Allow users to selectively adopt new features at their own pace.
We recognize the importance of updates to fix bugs and improve security, but changes that alter the core functionality or appearance of apps should come with accessibility options for those who depend on stability and familiarity.
Autistic children and adults already face countless challenges in a world not built for their needs. For many, their phone or tablet is a rare constant—a trusted tool for regulation and comfort. When that is disrupted, it can cause emotional distress and loss of function.
Please take a moment to consider how these changes affect users like my son, who may not even be able to communicate their frustrations. Imagine how it would feel if your child’s primary tool for calm and regulation suddenly became unusable.
Apple has the opportunity to lead the way in creating truly inclusive technology by addressing these accessibility concerns. We hope you will listen to this plea and take steps to ensure your updates work for all users, regardless of their abilities.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
