The Issue

As someone proudly sporting tattoos and piercings, I understand the importance of safety and cleanliness in the body modification industry. Unfortunately, many residents of Allegheny County, like myself, are unaware that there are currently no regulations ensuring the cleanliness and safety standards of the tattoo and piercing procedures available to us. This lack of regulation poses potential health risks, and it’s time for the Allegheny County Board of Health to act in the best interest of its citizens.

In Allegheny County, anyone can open a tattoo or piercing studio without adhering to standardized cleanliness policies or health inspections. While many dedicated artists maintain their own high standards, without formal regulations, there is nothing preventing unsafe practices from becoming a norm. This absence of oversight is a recipe for infections, disease transmission, and the deterioration of the industry’s reputation.

Regulations can ensure that all studios meet basic hygiene standards to protect artists and clients alike. By implementing health inspections and requiring certification for artists, Allegheny County can set a precedent for safety in the body modification industry. Similar measures have successfully improved safety in other states, reducing the risk of infections and ensuring a more professional standard across the board.

The Board of Health has the opportunity to turn the tide on this issue. With clear, enforceable rules and regular inspections, Allegheny County can become a leader in safe and regulated body art practices. It's crucial that we prioritize the safety of every resident who seeks to express themselves through tattoos and piercings.

Sign this petition to urge the Allegheny County Board of Health to establish regulations for the body modification industry. Our health and safety shouldn’t be left to chance.
