Uphold Jeepney Drivers' Rights: Say No to Forced Jeepney Modernization

The Issue

The jeepney modernization program is a government initiative aimed at upgrading the country’s public transportation system. It involves replacing old and outdated jeepneys with newer, more environmentally friendly, and safer vehicles.

The jeepney is ingrained in our culture and history and serves as more than just a means of transportation. It is regarded as the foundation of our public transportation system and has been providing services to the people of the Philippines for many years. Even while upgrading is required, jeepneys shouldn't entirely appear on our highways.

Critics argue that it may lead to the displacement of jeepney drivers and operators who cannot afford the cost of the new vehicles. They also raise concerns about the potential loss of the iconic jeepney as a cultural symbol and the impact on the livelihoods of those involved in the traditional jeepney industry.

Despite the government's promise of financial assistance, the reality is that small operators and drivers cannot afford new loans to acquire the costly modernized vehicles. The current income, which is crucial for their family's sustenance and vehicle maintenance, cannot bear additional financial burdens.

We think that jeepney drivers will be miserable if their jeep is broken and replaced with the latest jeepneys. Many are losing their jobs, and the latest jeepneys now cost around 1.5M-1.6M, which they still owe to the government. So, my petition is that we do not agree with the jeepney phase-out because they are part of our tradition and culture. Let's help our brave jeepney drivers.
