The Issue

No parent should be humiliated for feeding their baby.

But that’s what happened to Aris Kopiec, a Florida mother visiting Georgia, who says she was yelled at and ordered to leave Toccoa Riverside Restaurant after breastfeeding her infant, despite being covered and seated privately with her family.

The incident, captured on video and now spreading widely online, shows a man shouting at Kopiec while she holds her sleeping baby. Kopiec says she calmly reminded the man that Georgia law protects public breastfeeding. Instead of being acknowledged, she was shouted at again.

Georgia law is clear. Mothers have the legal right to breastfeed in any location where they are otherwise authorized to be. But when businesses ignore the law or shame mothers for feeding their children, that right becomes meaningless.

We are calling on the Georgia State Legislature and the Department of Public Health to:

  • Launch a public awareness campaign about Georgia’s breastfeeding protection law
  • Provide guidance and training to businesses on respectful, lawful treatment of nursing parents
  • Establish a clear complaint and accountability process for violations

This is not about restaurant policy or customer preference. It is about enforcing a law that protects families and babies across the state. When nursing parents are told to hide, leave, or "go to a corner," they are being shamed for something natural and legally protected.

Georgia families deserve better. Breastfeeding is a public health good, and no parent should be made to feel small or unwelcome for doing what’s best for their child.

Sign this petition to demand that Georgia uphold its public breastfeeding protections and take action to stop the harassment of nursing parents.
