Uphold Diversity and History in Anoka Hennepin Schools

Uphold Diversity and History in Anoka Hennepin Schools
The Issue
I am a student who has been part of the Anoka Hennepin school district for over 12 years. Throughout my time here, I have come to understand the importance of education that goes beyond just one story or perspective. Learning about diverse experiences is not only crucial but fundamental for personal and community growth. Over the past decade, our district has become more diverse - a fact that should be celebrated, not punished.
Recently, there have been moves to remove platforms that promote diversity and history from our schools. This is an affront to both education and diversity. It's essential to remember that these platforms are not just educational tools; they are windows into different cultures, histories, and perspectives.
According to data from Minnesota Department of Education (2019), Hennepin County's student population has grown increasingly diverse over the past ten years with students of color now making up 68% of total enrollment. This shift in demographics highlights the need for an inclusive curriculum that reflects our community's rich diversity.
The removal of these platforms would silence student voices and erase important parts of our shared history. We must stand against this move towards a less inclusive education system.
We call on decision-makers within the Anoka Hennepin school district to uphold diversity within our schools by maintaining these vital educational platforms. Please sign this petition if you believe in an inclusive education system where every voice matters. More information on what this is in response to, is linked.
Some groups across the district whos curriculum and right to assembly may be affected are Unified Club, BSU, MSA, GSA, and more. These groups emphasize the importance of not only recognizing identity but teaching others about it. If these clubs have affected you in anyway and you'd like to share, please fill this out.
Stories and experiences from students and our community are greatly appreciated!
