The Issue

As a shared space for Mabel Mattos Elementary School and the neighboring communities, the field at Delano Manongs Park is a central hub for families in Milpitas. Unfortunately, the grass field has deteriorated into a safety hazard, posing a significant risk to our kids.

Currently, the field's uneven foundation leaves half of the grass soaking wet year-round. The dry areas are just as hazardous, plagued by potholes and exposed landscape netting (the mesh meant to hold the soil in place). This exposed mesh is a severe tripping hazard for anyone simply walking across the field, let alone children running and playing sports. Because of these poor conditions, Mabel Mattos students rarely use the grass field for physical activities.

Children deserve a safe environment where they can engage in sports without the fear of injury. Transforming the existing grass field into an artificial turf field would resolve these risks. Turf provides a consistent, reliable, and level surface, minimizing the risk of twisted ankles and falls from uneven ground.

Furthermore, a turf conversion makes financial and environmental sense. In California, irrigation is a massive expense. Switching to turf eliminates the need for constant watering, saving valuable water resources and reducing long-term maintenance costs for the city.

By upgrading the shared field at Delano Manongs Park, we are investing in our children's health and our community's well-being. Join me in urging the Milpitas City Council and the Department of Parks and Recreation to prioritize this essential project. Please sign this petition to support turning the dangerous grass field at Delano Manongs Park into a safe, usable turf field.
