Upgrade Philippine Education: Modernize Curriculum & Boost Funding

Upgrade Philippine Education: Modernize Curriculum & Boost Funding
The Issue
Students in the Philippines remain among the world’s weakest in math, reading, and science. New findings by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) showed recent test scores showing no significant improvement from the country’s performance in 2018. The Philippines' performance in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) consistently reveals challenges in the country's education system. The 2022 PISA results highlighted a 5–6 year lag in learning competencies compared to OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries, particularly in mathematics, reading, and science.
To strengthen our campaign, we are conducting a request petition to the Department of Education to check our curriculum status and to be able to update it. In some cases, outdated curriculum is the cause for the lack of hands-on learning, the lack of teachers, and the lack of all-around development. The outdated curriculum in many schools and universities is another major issue. While there have been efforts to update and modernize the curriculum, much of it still focuses on rote memorization and traditional teaching methods rather than critical thinking and problem-solving skills. That is why many students are slow to catch up to lessons, causing the teachers to make amends and redo the lessons repeatedly, which is a big problem causing the whole class to be stuck on the same lesson over and over again while the other classes are greatly advanced to the next ones. Additionally, the lack of school funding and access to educational resources is also one of the reasons why we lack quality education. Many public schools and universities struggle to provide basic necessities like technology, textbooks, classroom materials, and even chairs and tables due to the lack of funding.
To deal with these issues, we need to invest more in our education system by focusing on increasing funding or distributing more educational necessities for schools and universities, updating the curriculum to focus on developing critical thinking and problem-solving, and focusing on teaching major subjects such as math, science, and english. So we hereby request the Department of Education to check our present curriculum in order for us to have a suitable curriculum for our students and the provision of effective learning materials to attain a better quality education.
The Department of Education needs to review and improve the current curriculum to ensure it truly meets the needs of students today. A strong and up-to-date curriculum for effective learning, helping students develop the knowledge and skills they need to be prepared for the future. In addition, providing the right learning materials is crucial for making lessons fun, accessible, and successful. This means that students can better understand what they are being taught and remember information more effectively. By understanding what students learn and how they learn it, we can ensure that every child receives a quality education that fits their current and future needs. This improvement benefits not just individual students, but the community as a whole, for creating more opportunities for growth, success, and positive change.
Our campaign will include the following essential elements to reach, inform, and engage supporters for improving the quality of education in the Philippines:
- An Online Petition on Change.org: We will create a petition calling out to the Department of Education, stating for a revision of the education to ensure it aligns with students’ current needs and provides them with essential skills. This petition will gather public support from students, parents, teachers, and citizens, demonstrating strong demand for educational revision.
- A Facebook Group for Community Engagement: This group will serve as a main platform for updates and where supporters can stay informed, share their perspectives, and have meaningful discussions about education revision.
- A Blog for Educational Advocacy and Updates: This blog will include detailed articles, evidence-based research, and expert opinions on the importance of a modernized curriculum, increased funding, and the benefits of promoting critical thinking in schools. Updates on the campaign’s progress, success stories, and educational resources will also be posted to help supporters stay informed and motivated.
- Infographics and Flyers: We will design easy-to-understand infographics and printable flyers to summarize the issues in the education system and the goals of the campaign. It can be shared on social media, posted in schools and communities, or distributed at events to reach a wider audience.
- Social Media Challenges and Hashtags: To catch the attention of students and younger audiences, we will create a social media challenge in platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Instagram, and Youtube) around a dedicated hashtag (like #BetterPhilippineEducation). It could be sharing personal stories or creative posts about why education revision matters, helping to spread awareness online.
- Petition Booths at Community Events: To reach a wider audience, we will set up small booths or tables at community events, markets, and fairs where people can learn more about the campaign, sign the petition, and connect with others who care about education.
Our campaign to improve the quality of education in the Philippines depends heavily on the combined support and cooperation of students, parents, teachers, and school administrators across the country. We are working to collect as many petition signatures as possible to reason to the Department of Education that there is widespread public support for modernizing the curriculum and increasing funding to provide essential resources that our schools need. Through our awareness efforts, we hope to encourage and inspire volunteers to join us in spreading our message, sharing our cause widely, and participating in meaningful discussions on ways to strengthen the education system. By working together, we can make a lasting difference for students throughout the Philippines and help create a future filled with greater opportunities and success for all.
We are proud to launch this campaign, A campaign to provide high-quality education to all children, regardless of their circumstances. Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Your support can help us make this vision a reality. Together, let’s remove the limits on learning and give every child the education they deserve.
